Yakima Packaging for Lock Cores

Yakima is one of the leading roof rack manufacturers in the world and they were looking for a package that was unique in its purpose and function in retail environments.

A Multi-Hinged Design

The conditions included a hanging paperboard package with features that allow customers to view the main components of the product, which are two lock cores and two keys. Elements of the design included a cavity for the locks, a separate cavity for the keys, both with friction fit seals. To retain these from becoming separated, each cavity needed to be held in one continuous thermoform design, resulting in a hinge feature.

The Solution

Collaborating with Yakima’s packaging design team and their paperboard supplier, the solution featured a clear thermoformed container that displayed the lock cores from the front and the keys from the top of the retail package. Each of the two items were secured within their individual clear container, complete with the friction seals.

While the sealed units remained packaged in separate clear containers, the locks and keys needed to be retained as a single unit, although somewhat of an oxymoron. A hinge was added to the design creating a single thermoformed package with multiple cavities and multiple functions. The hinge allows the keys to be folded over the top of the lock cores and as a single unit, inserted into the cardboard exterior package.

Success

This integrated package design is truly one of the most unique efforts and generates multiple benefits. Yakima is able to utilize more space for graphics and the package adheres to the goal of minimizing retail shelf space. Additionally, this package aids in the prevention of theft.
