At Indepak, we design many different types of thermoform packaging including clamshells, blisters, trays, tubs with lids and more. Blister card packaging can be an excellent option for many retail products, as well as personal care items.
But, what is a blister card? There are many types of blister packing, including full card blisters, face seal blisters and trap blisters. For some products, you also might opt for a clamshell and have it RF welded, stapled or heat-sealed.
With a full card blister, the card includes information about your product and the card and your product are encased in plastic that extends around the edges of the card. A custom cavity is created to hold and protect your product. With a face seal blister, the plastic typically ends near or at the edge of the card, using a bit less plastic. With a trap blister, a small piece of plastic is designed to fit around your product and that plastic is “trapped” between two pieces of die-cut paperboard or cardboard.
There are many reasons to consider opting for blister packaging, including:
1. Reduce Packaging Costs
Companies are always looking for ways to cut costs, and opting for a blister card can be a great way to save money. Reducing the amount of plastic used definitely can improve your packaging expenditures, and we do all we can to eliminate packaging waste. There’s nothing worse than spending money on excess packaging you don’t really need, and our design team is always looking for ways to reduce the size of packaging while still protecting and displaying your product to its best advantage.
We also have many different material options for your consideration. Our facility includes multiple lines of high-speed thermoforming equipment allowing us to process many types of plastic. We definitely can find something that suits your product needs and fits within your budget.
2. Increase Sustainability
Combination designs, such as trap blisters, really reduce the amount of plastic needed to protect a product and this increases sustainability. Keep in mind, that virtually of the materials we use are recyclable and we offer options such as materials with recycled content as well as starch-based bioplastics.
While plastics often get a bad rap, these materials actually can be your most eco-friendly option. For instance, these materials are much lighter in weight than cardboard, glass and aluminum. Therefore transporting plastic materials requires the use of less fossil fuel. The light weight combined with our ability to create smaller custom packaging designs allows you to ship more units in one shipment, which saves fuel and reduces your overall transportation costs.
3. Blisters Display & Protect Better Than Other Materials
Consumers are far more likely to purchase a product if they can see it, and clear blister card packaging allows them to view your items and compare them with other products. Additionally, plastic is impact-resistant and moisture-resistant, which protects whatever is placed inside. Using plastic materials is the best way to ensure that your product stays safe during transport as well as when it sits on a store shelf or hangs from a peg.
The type of blister card you choose will depend somewhat on the per-item cost of your product. For instance, a less expensive and lightweight item such as a disposable lighter probably would be perfect choice for a basic face seal blister.
If your product is a bit heavier or more expensive, you might opt for a full-face seal or full card blister or a trap blister as these packages are more tamper-resistant. If you truly need the ultimate level of protection, we probably will recommend that you opt for a sealed clamshell as these are highly tamper-resistant.
If you are shipping from companies such as Amazon, you might actually consider opting for two types of packaging. You might consider easy-open options for products shipped directly to homes and businesses, and a more tamper-resistant package to sit on a store shelf.
