Trident Seafoods is the largest seafood processing company in the US - an honor it earned due to its "Culture of Innovation." As the first company to catch, process and freeze seafood on the ship, Trident Seafoods set a new precedent for the industry. Today, they continue to sell the best seafood available by controlling every part of the process to ensure the freshest fish possible.
The Challenge
For a smoked salmon product, Trident was placing the salmon on a paper tray before vacuum sealing it into a poly bag. This paper tray was soaking up some of the oil that was coming from the salmon and causing the weights of the final product to fluctuate too greatly.
Initially Trident studied the option of overpacking the product to allow for the weight of the oil loss, but with the high cost of smoked salmon and their volume of hundreds of thousands of packages sold per year, they preferred to package the correct amount.
The Solution
Indepak engineers carefully studied the situation and worked with Trident to develop a custom packaging tray made from HDPE material in its FSSC 22000 certified facility in Portland, Oregon. Not only did this tray eliminate the weight fluctuation issues related to the paper trays, but it was designed to work in the same automated feeding process as their paper trays.
The Result
Trident was not only able to avoid the overpacking process that would have cost many thousands of dollars per year, they were also able to provide a consistent product to their customer and further enhance their reputation as innovators.
